Germany is set to unveil a sweeping defence procurement initiative worth tens of billions of euros, as part of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s bold agenda to overhaul the country’s military capabilities and establish it as Europe’s leading conventional force.
According to two sources familiar with the confidential plans, the German government is preparing to place substantial orders for advanced military hardware. These include the purchase of 20 Eurofighter jets, up to 3,000 Boxer armoured vehicles, and as many as 3,500 Patria infantry fighting vehicles.
The procurement push reflects Germany’s strategic shift toward greater self-reliance in defence matters. Berlin aims to reduce its dependence on the United States amid growing concerns over Washington’s unpredictable foreign policy direction. By significantly boosting its military strength, Germany is positioning itself to take on a more prominent role in safeguarding European security.
The move is part of a broader defence strategy under Merz, who has repeatedly emphasised the need for Germany to lead in shaping a stable and secure European order.
