Edo Women React as Court Declares NYSC Skirt Ban Unconstitutional

A recent ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which declared the National Youth Service Corps’ (NYSC) ban on skirts for female corps members as unconstitutional, has sparked diverse reactions across Edo State, particularly among women.

The court ruled that the NYSC’s dress code policy, which mandates the wearing of trousers for female members, violates their constitutional right to freedom of religion. According to the judgment, female corps members should be permitted to wear skirts if it aligns with their religious beliefs.

The decision has drawn mixed responses. Creda, a resident in Benin City, said she sees no need for the change, expressing concerns over its implications for uniformity. Another respondent, Kamilla, echoed similar sentiments, noting that wearing skirts could hinder movement during physical activities and drills.

On the other hand, some welcomed the development. Lydia, a university student, praised the court’s decision, describing it as a step in the right direction that upholds individual religious freedoms. Similarly, Rufiat applauded the judgment, saying it promotes inclusivity and respects diversity among corps members.

The NYSC is yet to issue an official response to the ruling.
