Edo Security Squad Arrests Nine Suspected Cultists, Recovers Firearms in Ovia North East

The Edo State Special Security Squad, codenamed Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers, has achieved another major breakthrough in its ongoing war against criminality with the arrest of nine suspected cultists in Iguoshodin N’ Ikpemaba, Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.

The Coordinator of the Squad, Mr. Idemudia Noah, disclosed that the operation, carried out on September 3, 2025, followed credible intelligence and a distress call from residents who reported being terrorized by suspected cult members.

“On arrival, our men moved swiftly and arrested nine suspects. A thorough search of the area led to the recovery of two Baretta pistols, two cut-to-size double-barrel guns, and live AK-47 ammunition,” Noah said.

He revealed that the weapons were recovered from a building allegedly belonging to the Okaighele of Omi, Mr. Osazuwa Igbineweka, who has since been declared wanted by the police for allegedly constituting a threat to peace in the community.

Noah further explained that preliminary investigations indicated the suspects are members of the Eiye confraternity, a notorious cult group linked to violent clashes across Edo communities.

“From intelligence gathered and from the relief expressed by residents, it is clear that some of those arrested belong to the Eiye cult group. Their arrest has restored confidence among the people who are pleased to see decisive action being taken,” he added.

The Coordinator emphasized that the recovered weapons are prohibited arms typically used by organized criminal networks, underscoring the level of danger the suspects posed.

Residents of Iguoshodin N’ Ikpemaba have praised the swift intervention, describing the operation as timely in restoring calm to the troubled community.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Edo State Special Security Squad assured residents that it will continue to work with security agencies and community stakeholders to stamp out cultism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across the state.
