Edo Police Foil Kidnap Attempt, Rescue 16 Passengers on Auchi–Benin Highway

The Edo State Police Command on Friday, September 5, 2025, successfully foiled a kidnap attempt and rescued 16 abducted passengers along the Auchi–Benin Highway.

In a statement, the Command said armed men ambushed a Toyota Hiace bus belonging to the New Edo Line Transport Company (Reg. No. EDO 14 B03 ED) and a Toyota Camry (Reg. No. LAGOS-KJA 833 HR) at a sharp bend between Odemwingie and Obanrenren communities. The hoodlums, shooting sporadically, forced some passengers into the bush.

Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, immediately ordered the deployment of tactical teams, the Divisional Police Officer from Ekiadolor, local vigilantes, and hunters. The combined team launched a swift operation that led to the safe rescue of 16 victims.

Efforts are still ongoing to free other abducted passengers and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Police Reaffirm Commitment to Safety

The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Edo State, noting that its recently launched Community Safety Partnership Initiative is designed to strengthen collaboration between security agencies and local communities.

Residents were urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and report suspicious movements to the nearest police station or call 08077773721 and 08037646272.
