Edo Assembly Advances Bill to Strengthen Fight Against Cultism

The bill seeking to amend the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law has scaled its second reading at the Edo State House of Assembly.

During the debate, Majority Leader Hon. Jonathan Ibhamawu explained that the amendment aims to give government the legal backing to prosecute not only individuals involved in cult activities but also their sponsors. He noted that the law would reinforce enforcement mechanisms and could reduce criminality in the state by up to 90 percent.

Supporting the bill, Hon. Adeh Isibor emphasized that tackling cultism is a collective responsibility of both the Assembly and the state government. He highlighted that improved security has revived nightlife in Edo State and boosted revenue generation.

Hon. Omosele Oligbi-Edeko commended the governor for sustaining the momentum in the anti-cultism campaign, while Hon. Atu Osawuyi praised his strong commitment to security, stressing that insecurity undermines social and economic development.

It would be recalled that the Assembly recently passed the Secret Cult Law 2025 to curb the menace of cult groups. The governor’s swift implementation of the law has since led to a significant decline in cult-related incidents across the state.
