The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested and named the suspect connected to the recent attack on Peter Obi in Benin City.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 24, when Obi and some African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftains were reportedly attacked at the residence of party chieftain John Odigie-Oyegun. Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient movement, confirmed the attack, while Olumide Akpata, Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2024 Edo governorship election, revealed that his cousin’s head was smashed with a bottle during the assault.
Shortly after the attack, a man identified as Udeme Stephen allegedly took to his X account, @stevetom788, claiming responsibility and threatening further violence against Obi. In his post, Stephen wrote that Obi was “lucky” to survive and issued a warning about an upcoming visit to Rivers State.
Following the threats, DSS operatives launched an immediate investigation, using forensic tools to track the suspect. A security source revealed that the 26-year-old suspect, who works as a teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Obio-Akpor LGA, Rivers State, was traced and taken into custody.
“I strongly believe that the outcome of the agency’s forensic investigations implicated the suspect,” the source said, emphasizing DSS’s commitment to investigating credible intelligence regardless of tribe or religion.
The source added that the suspect will soon be charged in court.
