DSS arrests man in Rivers after social-media call for military takeover

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a Port Harcourt resident, identified as Innocent Chukwuma, after he allegedly used his X account to urge the Nigerian military to suspend the civilian government and seize power.

According to reports, security agents trailed Chukwuma to his home in Oyigbo, Rivers State, and took him into custody on Wednesday after posts from the X handle @TheAgroman called for a coup and urged citizens to back the armed forces. In one of the messages quoted by news outlets, Chukwuma wrote: “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES. … Nigerians, the military needs your support now! Only them can save this country.”

Security analyst Zagazola Makama — who first disclosed the arrest on his X account — said the suspect was cooperating with investigators, and that inquiries by the DSS are ongoing. News outlets reporting the arrest also noted that Chukwuma’s X account had been suspended.

Local and national news organisations have carried the development, citing sources within the security services and social-media posts that brought the matter to light. The DSS has not issued a public statement available to reporters as of publication time; investigations were described as continuing.

Calls for military intervention are a sensitive and criminally charged matter under Nigerian law, and the arrest comes amid heightened attention to social-media activity seen as capable of inciting unrest. Journalists seeking comment from the DSS or from Chukwuma’s representatives were unable to immediately reach agency spokespeople or family contacts.
