Defence Minister Summons Service Chiefs Over Rising Terrorist Attacks in North-East

Christopher Musa has summoned Nigeria’s Service Chiefs to an emergency meeting following recent attacks on several military bases in the North-East.

The meeting, held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, brought together top military and intelligence officials to review the country’s counter-terrorism strategy.

Among those attending are the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, an Air Marshal; and the Chief of Naval Staff, Idi Abass, a Vice Admiral.

Representatives of the National Intelligence Agency were also present at the meeting.

According to reports by Daily Trust, at least three commanding officers with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel were recently killed by terrorists during attacks on military formations in Borno State. Several soldiers were also killed, while hundreds of civilians abducted during the attacks remain in captivity.

Speaking briefly before the meeting went into a closed-door session, Musa said the gathering was aimed at reviewing operational strategies to better confront terrorist groups operating in the region.

“We know we have recorded some casualties, but it is more on the side of the terrorists,” the retired four-star general said.
