Amid the persistent surge in food prices across Nigeria, residents of Benin City have voiced growing concerns over the diminishing value of packaged and canned goods.
According to a market survey conducted by Vibes FM correspondent Rafatu Shaibu, consumers and provision sellers alike have observed that many products now contain less quantity than they did just a few years ago.
Speaking with a cross-section of traders in Benin City, several provision sellers shared their frustrations, particularly regarding the sale of biscuits and sweets.
Omorodion Stella, a local shop owner, lamented that prices in 2025 have soared higher than in previous years, with many products failing to meet the quality standards expected at such inflated costs.
Another trader, Osato, pointed out a sharp reduction in the sizes and quantities of goods on the shelves, despite the continued spike in prices.
Other sellers echoed similar sentiments, describing the trend as both rapid and alarming. They called on the government to urgently intervene and implement policies that will ease the financial burden on everyday citizens.
