ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unfulfilled FG Agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of an impending nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of reneging on key agreements aimed at revitalising and properly funding Nigeria’s public universities.

At a press conference in Jos, ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, said university lecturers have endured more than two years of government’s delay tactics and unfulfilled promises.

He highlighted unresolved issues including the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, unpaid salary arrears, withheld promotions, and poor welfare packages for retired lecturers.

Piwuna also rejected the government’s proposed loan scheme for tertiary institution staff, describing it as a “trap” rather than a solution.

The union further condemned the creation of more universities without sustainable funding, arguing that the move has weakened standards and pushed Nigeria further down in global education rankings.

On pensions, ASUU lamented that professors who have served for over 40 years now earn as little as ₦150,000 monthly, despite the rising cost of living.
