As part of the coronation ceremonies of former Oyo State Governor, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, theatre enthusiasts, indigenes, and guests converged on Monday evening at the Apex Event Centre, Agodi, Ibadan, for the staging of Arusa—a play celebrating Ibadan’s rich royal heritage.
Written by Gbemi Faleti, produced by Biodun Latinwo Eleni, and directed by veteran theatre practitioner Yomi Duro-Ladipo, the production formed part of an extensive eight-day programme marking Ladoja’s coronation.
Producer Latinwo explained that Arusa was originally conceived as a tribute to Ladoja’s 80th birthday but was later woven into the coronation schedule.
“When I first contacted Faleti and Duro-Ladipo, our plan was to stage Arusa as a birthday honour for my father and benefactor, Kabiyesi. But when Kabiyesi preferred a quiet celebration, we shelved it—only to revive it upon news of his coronation. Today, Arusa has found its rightful place in Ibadan’s historic moment,” he said.
The play highlights Ladoja’s journey of trials and triumphs, reflecting his transition from business to politics while honouring his ancestry. Latinwo also credited Baba Ojerinde Onibudo for providing oral history that enriched the script.
Co-writer and associate producer Faleti explained that the narrative weaves together the stories of two figures—Arusa Ogungbenro, an ancient progenitor, and the modern-day Arusa, embodied by Ladoja.
“Focusing only on Ogungbenro would not capture Ladoja’s essence. By blending the ancient and the modern, Arusa transcends time, celebrating resilience, leadership, and destiny across generations,” Faleti noted.
The drama portrays Ogungbenro of Laleye, who defies a deadly tradition tied to the deity Orisa Aabonabon. While carriers of the deity’s role were fated to die within a year, Ogungbenro survives three consecutive festivals, shattering the curse, sparking political intrigue, and leaving behind a legacy of defiance and courage.
Featuring a stellar cast—including Dele Odule, Taiwo Ibikunle, Taofeek Adewale (Diaboluja), Toyin Adegbola, Akeem Alimi (Ajala Jalingo), Gbemi Faleti, Ayo Williams, and Kayode Olaiya (Aderupoko)—the play blends cultural storytelling with dramatic flair.
Events marking Ladoja’s coronation began Monday with an interdenominational prayer at Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo, in Ibadan North. His official coronation will take place on Friday, September 26, at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan South East, a day after his 81st birthday.
Ladoja ascended as Olubadan-designate following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on July 7, 2025.
