The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the state House of Assembly by-elections held on Saturday in two constituencies in Kano State.
The by-elections, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), took place in Kano Municipal and Ungogo state constituencies to fill vacant seats in the Kano State House of Assembly.
Declaring the results, Professor Ibrahim Tajo Sirajo, the returning officer for Kano Municipal, announced Aliyu Nabil Daneji of the APC as the winner.
According to him, Daneji polled 7,484 votes to defeat his closest rival, Abdullahi Mohammad of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), who secured 31 votes.
Similarly, the returning officer for Ungogo State Constituency, Professor Ali Tijjani Abdullahi, declared Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad of the APC as the winner of the by-election.
INEC stated that Sa’ad defeated Shaabu Hamisu of the ADP, who scored 54 votes, and Adamu Aishatu of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), who garnered 51 votes.
Meanwhile, INEC attributed the low voter turnout recorded during the exercise to the ongoing Ramadan fasting period.
The Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner, Amb. Abdu Zango, made this known while speaking to journalists at Kankarfi Ward in Kano Municipal during an inspection of the poll, accompanied by security chiefs.
Zango expressed satisfaction with the functionality of electoral materials and the security arrangements put in place for the election. He also clarified that INEC could not be held responsible for the absence of some major opposition parties on the ballot, noting that political parties are responsible for meeting participation requirements.
On his part, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Ibrahim Bakori, said the tactical deployment of security personnel ensured the smooth and peaceful conduct of the by-election.
