ADC Alleges Plot to Undermine Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections, Presidency Denies Claims

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections.

The party alleged that the plan is aimed at ensuring that Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerges as the sole contender in the presidential race.

In a statement issued in Abuja, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi claimed that the alleged plot involves pressuring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe as the party’s National Chairman.

The ADC insisted that such a move would be resisted, stressing that its leadership remains under David Mark following a joint meeting of its National Working Committee and National Executive Committee in July 2025, reportedly observed by INEC officials.

The party described the alleged move as an attempt to destabilise what it called a credible opposition platform, especially amid internal challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).

According to the ADC, the purported plan is being driven by unnamed political and security actors seeking to create confusion within the party and weaken democratic pluralism.

However, the Presidency has dismissed the allegations as baseless. Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said the claims were internal matters for the ADC to resolve.

“This is an ADC party matter. Let the party resolve its internal issues,” Onanuga said, adding that INEC would address any issues relating to party leadership recognition.

Meanwhile, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka attributed recent defections from the PDP to internal crises within the opposition party, rather than any external interference.

With key timelines approaching, including deadlines for submission of party membership registers and primaries, the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections continues to witness rising tensions and accusations among major parties.
