Syria Battles Heatwave-Fueled Wildfires, Containment Achieved

Syria’s civil defence agency has announced that the wildfires raging for over 10 days in the western part of the country have been brought under control. The fires, which broke out in the coastal province of Latakia amid a severe heatwave, scorched approximately 100 square kilometres of forest and farmland and forced evacuations in the region.

In a statement, the agency confirmed that the spread of the fires had been halted, and all active hotspots were now contained. Ground teams are currently working to cool the affected areas and are closely monitoring the situation for any signs of reignition.

Additionally, rescue teams are creating pathways and firebreaks within the forested zones to minimize the risk of future flare-ups
