North Macedonia Battles 21 Wildfires as State of Crisis Declared

More than 20 wildfires have erupted across North Macedonia, with several nearing residential areas, prompting urgent action from authorities. The country’s national crisis management centre reported 21 active fires late Wednesday, intensified by strong winds.

A state of crisis was declared on Tuesday, and by Wednesday, new blazes had broken out near the capital, Skopje, blanketing the city in dense smoke. One fire at an illegal landfill just two kilometres from the city center injured at least one person, while residents were advised to remain indoors with windows shut.

Meanwhile, police discovered a body near a wildfire in a village close to Kriva Palanka in the east. The cause of death is yet to be determined. Authorities also suspect arson in some of the cases.
