Movement into and out of Osun State will be restricted from midnight on Friday as security agencies intensify preparations for the state governorship election.
The Nigeria Police Force said the restriction would cover major border routes leading into the state, with the Army expected to block entry points as part of efforts to maintain peace and security during the election.
Only individuals performing essential duties, security operations and voters travelling to exercise their civic rights will be permitted to move during the restriction period.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Thursday.
According to him, the measure forms part of a broader security strategy aimed at preventing suspected troublemakers from entering the state.
More than 15,000 police personnel have been deployed across Osun State for the election. About 30 Commissioners of Police will also participate in the operation, with each of the state’s 30 Local Government Areas assigned a commissioner to coordinate security activities.
A Deputy Inspector-General of Police will oversee the overall security operation, while Deputy Commissioners of Police and senior Mobile Police Force officers will support coordination at the local government level.
Armed Mobile Police Force units have also been deployed across the state. Each local government area will have a unit comprising about 60 officers, while two additional units have been assigned to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo.
A helicopter and drone team have equally arrived in the state to conduct aerial surveillance and monitor areas of concern before, during and immediately after the election.
The police said preparations began about three weeks ago, with security agencies working to deploy personnel and equipment across the state.
Residents have been warned against electoral offences, including intimidation, stalking, vote buying and ballot-box snatching.
Parents and guardians have also been urged to caution their children against participating in activities that could result in arrest or prosecution.
A mobile court will be available to handle cases involving individuals arrested for electoral offences during the election.
