The Lagos State Government has begun plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to promote inclusion, improve accessibility and enhance mobility across the state.
The proposal was discussed during a courtesy visit by the management of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) to the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored collaboration on the development and implementation of the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a significant step towards Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
He said the specialised number plates would improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for persons with disabilities across the state while reinforcing the principles of inclusive governance.
Muri-Okunola disclosed that the agency had already initiated discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and would commence the necessary administrative processes in collaboration with LASODA to ensure the successful rollout of the initiative.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, explained that the proposed number plates are intended to cater to all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers.
According to her, the system will enhance identification, accessibility and support for members of the disability community while demonstrating the government’s commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities.
She called on stakeholders to support policies that advance the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, stressing that inclusion is a shared responsibility.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the initiative in line with the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which established LASODA to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities across all sectors.
The meeting was attended by directors and senior management officials from LASODA and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.
