The Delta State Police Command has arrested nine suspects following the commencement of a statewide enforcement operation aimed at dismantling illegal roadblocks and curbing unauthorised revenue collection on major highways across the state.
The operation, which began on Friday, was launched in strict compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to eliminate extortion, unlawful toll collection, and other criminal activities that have continued to threaten the safety and free movement of motorists on Nigerian roads.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Bright Edafe, said the exercise specifically targets notorious flashpoints where illegal roadblocks and unauthorised levies have become rampant, causing hardship for commuters and disrupting the smooth flow of traffic.
According to the statement, the nine suspects were apprehended at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis at the Delta-Anambra boundary and the Benin-Asaba Expressway near Agbor—areas identified as major hotspots for illegal revenue collection and extortion.
The command said the clampdown forms part of a sustained effort to restore public confidence, safeguard road users, and ensure that highways within the state remain free from criminal elements exploiting motorists through illegal checkpoints and forced payments.
The Delta State Police Command reiterated its commitment to enforcing the Federal Government’s directive and warned individuals or groups involved in setting up illegal roadblocks or collecting unauthorised levies to desist or face the full weight of the law.
The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, illegal checkpoints, or cases of extortion to the nearest police station, assuring residents that the operation will continue across the state until all unlawful roadblocks are completely dismantled.
