The Centre for Justice and Equity (CJE) has dismissed reports alleging that former Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, financed a purported coup against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Describing the allegations as unverified, the group said it was troubling that some reputable online platforms published the claims without concrete evidence.
In a statement signed by Chief Igoni William, CJE expressed concern that the reports were circulated without confirmation from the Defence Headquarters or any other relevant security agencies.
“We, therefore, question the source, authenticity, and timing of the information relied upon in the publication,” the statement read. “It is a fundamental principle of justice and democratic governance that allegations must be verified, officially communicated, and subjected to due process, not advanced through speculative or selective leaks.”
The group noted what it described as a growing pattern of recurring accusations against Sylva, raising concerns about coordinated attempts to shape public opinion.
CJE further alleged that certain political actors within Bayelsa State may be amplifying anti-Sylva narratives for partisan gain, warning that weaponising national security issues for local political battles undermines democratic stability and public trust.
“The Centre for Justice and Equity states categorically that there is no credible or verifiable evidence linking Timipre Sylva to any coup plot or unconstitutional activity,” the statement added, pointing to Sylva’s record in public service as evidence of his commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law.
The group called on security agencies to clarify the status of any investigations through official channels, urged media organisations to uphold professionalism and strict verification standards, and advised political actors to refrain from exploiting national security matters for political advantage.
“Nigeria’s democracy is best served when justice is guided by facts, law, and due process — not by conjecture, leaks, or politically motivated narratives,” CJE stated.
