German football manager Jurgen Klopp rejected approaches from Manchester United and Chelsea after leaving Liverpool, his agent has revealed.
Klopp, 58, stepped down from his role at Anfield in the summer of 2024, shortly after Mauricio Pochettino was dismissed by Chelsea and while United were considering replacements for Erik ten Hag.
Upon his departure, Klopp said he could not imagine managing another English club and admitted he was burnt out after nearly nine years on Merseyside.
However, his agent, Marc Kosicke, disclosed that interest from top clubs did not stop. Speaking to Transfermarkt, Kosicke said Klopp was also a potential candidate to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager.
“Before joining Red Bull, Jurgen could have coached the USA or England. Probably also Germany, if Julian Nagelsmann hadn’t already been there,” Kosicke said.
He added that despite Klopp’s public declaration that he would not manage another English club, Chelsea and Manchester United still made inquiries.
“Even Chelsea and Manchester United inquired, although Jurgen had clearly stated that he would not coach any other club in England. These inquiries keep coming,” Kosicke noted.
He stressed that Klopp is currently content in his new role with Red Bull and takes pride in having managed only three clubs in his career without ever being dismissed.
Chelsea eventually appointed Enzo Maresca, who went on to win the UEFA Europa Conference League and Club World Cup before being sacked in January.
