Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Atalanta for the transfer of Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, the Spanish club confirmed on Sunday, February 1.
In a statement, Atletico said both clubs had finalised terms for the signing of the 28-year-old forward, who has already arrived in Madrid. The transfer is subject to the player passing a medical examination and completing final contract documentation.
Media reports place the transfer fee at around €40 million. Lookman gained worldwide recognition after scoring a stunning hat-trick in Atalanta’s victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final. He also played a key role in Nigeria’s strong performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The winger has scored three goals in 19 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta this season.
Born in London, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Everton. He later joined RB Leipzig and enjoyed loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City, before completing a permanent transfer to Atalanta in 2022.
Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has been eager to reinforce his squad following recent departures, including Giacomo Raspadori to Atalanta and Conor Gallagher to Tottenham. Lookman’s arrival is expected to provide pace, creativity and attacking depth for the Rojiblancos, particularly as striker Julián Álvarez continues to struggle for goals in La Liga.
