Renewed Hope Initiative: Tinubu Government Empowers 9,500 Veterans, Elderly with ₦1.9bn Nationwide

The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), spearheaded by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has delivered a ₦1.9 billion lifeline to no fewer than 9,500 veterans and vulnerable elderly citizens across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reinforcing the Tinubu administration’s commitment to social protection.

The intervention, which marks the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), is designed to improve the welfare, dignity and quality of life of senior citizens aged 65 years and above, while also extending support to veterans’ families through the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).

In Edo State, the programme took place at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, where 250 beneficiaries drawn from the state’s three senatorial districts received ₦200,000 each in recognition of their service, resilience and contribution to nation-building.

With the theme “Finding Joy in Old Age,” the scheme involves a total disbursement of ₦50 million per state, including the FCT and DEPOWA, amounting to ₦1.9 billion nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Senator Oluremi Tinubu described the initiative as a reflection of a compassionate, people-centred administration that values the sacrifices and enduring contributions of senior citizens. She noted that since the inception of the current administration in 2023, elderly citizens have been deliberately celebrated every December as a mark of national gratitude.

Represented by the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, the First Lady explained that each of the 9,500 beneficiaries nationwide received ₦200,000 to cushion economic pressures and enhance their wellbeing, particularly during the festive season.

“As we approach the festive period, it is important to prioritise our elderly citizens. They walked difficult paths so that younger generations may enjoy smoother roads. It is our moral duty to ensure they live their later years in comfort, good health and dignity,” she said.

In a goodwill message, the Special Adviser on Health to the Edo State Government, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, stressed the importance of holistic care for senior citizens, advising beneficiaries to adopt healthy lifestyles, engage in light physical exercise and seek regular medical check-ups rather than self-medication.

Several beneficiaries, including Madam Agnes Akhamentalor, Mrs. George Abhulimen, Mr. Etiake Bernard and Mrs. Emorkidi Kate, expressed deep appreciation to the First Lady for the initiative, describing it as timely, compassionate and impactful on their wellbeing and sense of inclusion.
