The Chairman of Egor Local Government Area, Hon. Osaro Eribo, on Tuesday debunked claims that local councils are poorly funded, dismissing such assertions as unfounded. He also stated that Governor Monday Okpebholo does not interfere with council funds.
Hon. Eribo explained that shortly after assuming office, he was able to execute several projects—including the renovation of schools, sinking of boreholes, the purchase of 10 transformers, and the construction of a market—because adequate funds were made available.
Speaking during an interview in Uselu, the headquarters of Egor Local Government Area, the council chairman said that funds remain sufficient to carry out developmental projects after the payment of staff salaries.
According to him, requests were received from various communities for a total of 57 transformers; however, the council was able to procure 10 transformers, one for each of the 10 wards in the local government.
Hon. Eribo expressed confidence that his performance would earn him the support of the people to continue in office after the expiration of his tenure.
He said, “Before I came on board, I often heard claims that local governments were not well funded. However, in the two and a half months I have spent in office, I have discovered that such claims are nothing but blackmail.
“What we receive from the state is sufficient to execute at least two projects after paying salaries. In less than three months, I have purchased 10 transformers, renovated schools, rehabilitated the council secretariat, sunk two boreholes, and commenced work on Ogida Market.
“I commend Governor Monday Okpebholo for making funds available and giving us the opportunity to work.”
The Egor council boss also disclosed plans to embark on the massive grading of rural roads across the local government during the dry season.
