The Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide has condemned the reported inauguration of Pastor Josephine Ebhaguejezele as Iyeki, describing it as a violation of Benin cultural heritage and tradition.
In a statement jointly signed by the Culture-President, Mr. Iyamu Osaro, and Secretary General, Mr. Osayuki-Osa Benson, the group emphasized that the title of Iyeki is a sacred institution rooted in Benin tradition, not subject to alteration by individuals, political actors, or government bodies.
“The position of Iyeki is not a political or governmental creation but a cultural institution established by Benin customs. It serves as a custodian of traditional affairs across various markets in the Benin Kingdom,” the statement read.
According to the group, the Iyeki are traditionally elected by their peers from different markets, with the Apex Iyeki chosen among them and presented to the Benin Royal Palace for blessings and spiritual endorsement.
The movement questioned Pastor Ebhaguejezele’s eligibility, stressing that she does not meet the fundamental requirement of being a Benin woman.
“We ask, is Pastor Josephine Ebhaguejezele a Benin woman? If not, then she cannot assume the role of Iyeki. Anyone, whether traditional chief or political figure, supporting her will have a problem with us,” the statement declared.
Citing the pronouncements of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the group reaffirmed that only Benin women are qualified for the position.
The Aiguobasinmwin Movement, therefore, urged all Benin women across the markets in the kingdom to immediately commence the traditional process of electing a new Iyeki in line with long-established cultural norms.
They further advised women to adhere strictly to the eligibility requirements and cultural protocols to preserve the sanctity of the institution.
