European Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain will contest their first-ever Intercontinental Cup final in Doha, Qatar, on December 17, FIFA announced on Sunday.
Their opponents will be decided just four days earlier in the Challenger Cup playoff. The playoff will see African champions Pyramids of Egypt face the winner between Central American champions Cruz Azul (Mexico) and the eventual Copa Libertadores champion.
The Copa Libertadores, still at the semi-final stage, features two Brazilian clubs. Palmeiras are set to clash with Ecuador’s LDU Quito, while Flamengo meet Argentine side Racing. The Libertadores final will be held on November 29.
The Intercontinental Cup, originally staged between 1960 and 2004, matched the champions of Europe and South America. In 2005, it evolved into the Club World Cup, expanding to include continental champions from across the globe. That competition was rebranded this year as a 32-team quadrennial tournament, with Chelsea emerging as inaugural champions of the new format.
