12-Year-Old Student Dies in Edo Flood Tragedy

The Edo State Government has mourned the tragic loss of Master Nathan Spencer, a young schoolboy who died in a recent flood in the Uselu area of Egor Local Government Area.

Leading a condolence visit to the grieving family, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu — representing Governor Monday Okpebholo — described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has deeply affected not just the family, but the entire state. He was accompanied by officials from the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA), including Director of Operations, Engineer Mike Aigbokhan, as well as leaders from the Egor Local Government Council.

Dr. Iyamu described Nathan as a bright and promising child whose life was tragically cut short under avoidable circumstances. He urged parents to prioritize safety, especially during the rainy season, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving its emergency response systems.

During the visit, the Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Jerry Idahosa, emphasized the need for increased public awareness and caution during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in flood-prone communities like Uselu. Similarly, the Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Kelvin Eguakun, appealed to residents to avoid wading or driving through floodwaters, especially in the early hours of the day.

In an emotional moment, Nathan’s father, Paul Spencer, thanked the state and local government officials for their visit and support, noting that while the family is heartbroken by the loss, they draw strength and comfort from the government’s show of solidarity.
